Put To The Test
On The Road
We recently acquired a new Shark RSI full-face helmet to evaluate. The bright Titan graphics contrast nicely with the black matte finish that obscures the underlying carbon/Kevlar composite fiber shell. Weighing in at 3.45 pounds (size L), this helmet was about the same in weight to a comparable Arai and HJC we also had on hand. While we slipped on the helmet, luxurious was our first thought due to the plush, washable liner, padded chin strap and perfect fit. The interior foam was snug in all the right places but without any noticeable pressure points.

The RSI has two vents actuated via push levers (even with heavy gloves), providing extra airflow through the helmet. It being winter, we only used the lower chin vent, which prevents the visor from getting foggy; it was difficult to discern the effectiveness of the top vent due to the cold temps. The thick, quick-release visor detaches with the simple push of a button and meets the highest international standards for impact resistance. Additionally, a scratch- and fog-resistant coating on the visor keeps it looking new longer.

Shark has spent considerable efforts testing their helmets with MotoGP pilots and circuits around the world. Out on the road at speed, we found the helmet's aerodynamics to be outstanding without any buffeting or head jostling. This helped keep the noise down, too, creating a comfortable, whistle-free riding environment. We're looking forward to putting more miles on this well-made helmet, especially when the temperature rises.
